Workshop Peer Mentors

Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Research Workshop (AHSS) Peer Mentor Program

What do they do?

Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences Research Workshop (AHSS) peer mentors work with the entire cohort of participants in AHSS. The AHSS peer mentors provide a crucial link between the challenges involved in developing your own independent project for the first time and the real life student experience.  All peer mentors have been through the SURG application process themselves, so they provide significant insight to the student participants.

Science Research Workshop (SRW) Peer Mentor Program

What do they do?

SRW peer mentors lead an assigned group and serve as a resource to all participants in the program. The peer mentors in this program are highly regarded by participants as critical to their own success. Peer Mentors for this program are recruited in Fall quarter each year and undergo training with small group facilitation, beginning research mentorship, and diversity and inclusion to support them for their role in the program as well as their future careers. This experience is an intensive experience that past peer mentors have called “a great exposure to what real science research mentorship is like” and used their experiences in the program for their fellowship and graduate school application statements. Qualified senior peer mentors are invited to aid in the re-design of group activities around each curricular topic and participate in other advanced leadership roles within the program. Past peer mentors have gone on to graduate school, to win major international and national fellowships, to work in highly regarded industry positions, as well as other great things.
