When I think of Europe, I think of museums, churches, and cafes. Thus, for part 2 of my Málaga explorations, I will share some of the galleries I visited as well as some of the fun (non-coffee, non-alcoholic) drinks I enjoyed.
– Jorge Rando Museum: I visited Jorge Rando’s museum on my last day in Málaga. Rando is a contemporary expressionist painter who reacts to social justice issues around the world. I found the exhibit on Ukraine to be quite moving.
– Málaga Cathedral: A grandiose baroque cathedral just North of the Soho district. Sydney and I spent a lot of time looking at the ceiling and admiring the expression of faith there.
– Centre Pompidou: A modern art museum next to the beach. I loved the sound exhibit there, as well as a piece with two inflatable, sleeping beans. (All from a modern art junkie.)
– Picasso Museo: Málaga is Picasso’s birthplace. The museum showed me a different side of the great artist, as I was only familiar with his artistic periods immediately preceding and following the second world war. In particular, I loved the work he did at the end of his life in the 60s and 70s.
– Carmen Thyssen Museo: A collection of realist works from the 17th-19th centuries. I was not as impressed by this collection as the others I visited.
– Mia Coffee: Best pastries, best matcha latte. This small cafe has a walk-up order window and the quickest service I had in Málaga.
– Santa Coffee: Best breakfast, best smoothies. I went back to Santa several times to have more smoked salmon breakfast toast and another smoothie. I also enjoyed the atmosphere there, as I could read while eating.
– Bertani Coffee: A favorite for locals in Málaga, I liked the atmosphere and regret that I got there too late to have a sandwich. The matcha was good, albeit too sweet.
– Reviv Juice: I had an amazing banana-date smoothie. It was a great environment to work as well, so I read and thought about my research.
– Amelie Coffee: Another great work environment. They had good black tea, and I got a cup between activities one day.
– El Ultimo Mono Juice: Best sandwiches. I was ravenously hungry after the 20 km bike ride, so I had a smoothie and a sandwich over the course of an hour.
I will continue to observe classes remotely for the Spanish institute while I am in Prague, so I will write the research summary for Spain within the next week and a half. Until then, look forward to posts about my adventures in Prague!
A reminder: I update my photo blog for every day of travel, so if you want more details about my day-to-day life, here is the best place to go.
Cheers,
MEG
